Most commonly ‘lumps and bumps’ which you will feel under your skin are cysts or fatty lumps (lipomas) but there are many other causes. We can diagnose most lumps at one of our clinics; even those where investigation is required such as an ultrasound scan or MR scan.
Lipoma
What is a lipoma?
A lipoma occurs when a lump of fat begins to grow into the soft tissue part of your body. Though they’re classified as tumours, they are usually harmless and are the most common tumour to form beneath your skin, with approximately 1 person in 1,000 developing a lipoma at some point. The most common places to find them are in your upper body, arms or thighs.
A lipoma will usually appear as a small soft lump less than 2 inches wide, sometimes more than one developing. The lipoma will move easily with finger pressure and do not usually hurt, although you may feel pain if they form nearby nerves or have blood vessels running through them.
Treatment
Lipoma’s can be treated at one of our minor surgery clinics. The usual process involves a local anaesthetic to numb the area, excision of the lipoma and closure of the wound with stitches which are to be removed within a week or two. This process is relatively quick and in almost all cases, patients are able to go home after completion.

Sebaceous Cysts
What is a Sebaceous Cyst?
A sebaceous cyst is the most common type of cyst which is caused by the blockage of one of the small sebaceous glands in the skin. Sebaceous glands produce oil (sebum) that keeps the hair and skin moist. If the pore of the gland is blocked or damaged the sebaceous material builds up into a cyst beneath the skin. Small cysts are usually not painful, whereas large cysts can be uncomfortable and cause pressure and pain. There is a chance that cysts can become infected; when this occurs the cyst will become quite painful, red and warm to touch. An infected cyst may have a yellow, pungent discharge. It is best that infected cysts are treated with a course of antibiotics initially, before excision.
